DIY: Stylish Phone Grip

I had been on the lookout for a stylish case for my iPhone for quite some time now. After all, I carry it around everywhere I go – more than my beloved purse! Why shouldn’t I consider my phone an important accessory just like everything else, right? Then, earlier this year, I ran into friend and happened to notice her simple dark phone case, with a dark blue agate rock attached to her phone grip. I asked her where she bought it, and when she told me she made it herself, and how easy it was – a light bulb went off!

See what I mean? Doesn’t it coordinate so nicely with my clutch??

My favorite Aunt, who lives in California, has always been a huge influence in my life and she has been a follower of New Age practices for as long as I can remember. When I was pregnant with Avery, the first grandchild on my mother’s side of the family, Pattie started gifting me various crystals to place here and there – and I have since added to my crystal collection. I love having them around – I think they are beautiful, and I find them comforting. Healing crystals have been used to promote both physical and emotional well being since ancient times – who am I to discount that? If you’re interested in learning more, the Energy Muse has a wonderful beginner’s guide to help you get started.

Anyway, back to the crystal – the one on my phone grip is a rough, milky Rose Quartz. I have read that Rose Quartz is a stone of the heart, a crystal of unconditional love. According to Crystal Vaults, a definitive online crystal resource: “It carries a soft feminine energy of compassion and peace, tenderness and healing, nourishment and comfort. It speaks directly to the Heart Chakra, dissolving emotional wounds, fears and resentments, and circulates a Divine loving energy throughout the entire aura. Reawakening the heart to its own innate love, it provides a deep sense of personal fulfillment and contentment, allowing one the capacity to truly give and receive love from others”.

Perfect for taking selfies!

If you have read my “Live Well” post, in which I talk about my personal journey in 2017, you would know just how appropriate it is that this crystal is what I am carrying around all day, every day. Rose Quartz is a calming and reassuring crystal, which strengthens empathy, sensitivity, and aids in the acceptance of necessary change. It is also an excellent stone for comforting grief. Maybe the universe does have my back, after all?

Creating this unique piece was actually quite simple, once I knew what stone I wanted. The crystal needed to be flat so I could easily adhere it to the surface of the phone stand – and also so it wouldn’t catch on things like a sweater, a scarf, or scratch things like sunglasses in my purse. I found it in the jewelry / crafting department of Hobby Lobby, of all places! I ordered a white marble and rose gold silicone iPhone cover case and a rose gold pop out phone grip, both from Amazon, each coordinate nicely with the rose quartz. Unfortunately I can’t wear rose gold jewelry, it just doesn’t work with my skin tone – so I am beyond excited to have an accessory in this metallic tone! I used Gorilla Glue to adhere the crystal to the circular rose gold surface of the phone grip and used a clamp to safely secure for a solid thirty minutes. Then I used the materials included with the phone grip to my phone case. I promise, it was so easy!

Even my cute college-age babysitter thinks it is super cool! Major win.

I am in love with the functionality of my new blinged-out phone grip, too. It allows my hand to relax while also securely holding the phone – I haven’t dropped it since. Also, the expanding phone grip is small and convenient, so I can collapse it and carry it anywhere – it still fits in my pocket when collapsed. When expanded it also functions as a convenient stand – allowing me to read the screen on my phone at an angle without needing an additional prop, perfect when I am working in the kitchen, which feels like always, basically.

So not only is it functional and beautiful, let me tell you – this phone grip is a conversation starter like no other! I can’t tell you how many people have asked where I bought it…and when I told them I made it, that I should sell them on Etsy. Maybe that will be my next side hustle.
